Gothenburg Urban Living Lab

ULL Gothenburg is committed to approaching a more holistic method for urban greenery planning and maintenance supported by digital tools and platforms. As wind is a major threat to urban trees in ULL Gothenburg, focus is put on wind risk evaluation. The core activities of ULL Gothenburg focus on advancing detailed understanding of how wind influences trees and how trees, in turn, shape the wind environment. It will build on the previous works to simulate environmental processes and flows in the urban built environment, providing assistance to decision-making, and will go deeper into the individual tree-environment interaction through high-fidelity simulations. ULL Gothenburg will support pollution monitoring campaigns with site simulations and experience from previous site studies.

Project Partners

Fraunhofer-Chalmers Research Centre

Research

The Fraunhofer-Chalmers Research Centre for Industrial Mathematics (FCC) is a joint research institute founded by Chalmers and Fraunhofer, specializing in applied mathematics for industry, the public sector, and society. FCC’s Computational Engineering and Design department brings extensive expertise in advanced numerical methods, multi-physics simulations, and data-driven modelling, with a strong focus on environmental processes in urban areas.

COWI

Company

COWI A/S is an international consultancy within engineering, architecture, energy and environment. Together with customers, they co-create more sustainable and beautiful solutions that improve the quality of life for people. Projects often have a focus on investigating environmental problems suggesting green infrastructure measures, for example increasing the tree cover and green areas, to improve local climate issues, such as heat, stormwater and air pollution both for today and with future climate change.

Gothenburg

Municipality

The City of Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden with around 31 000 trees marked across its parks, streets and various public spaces and countless more trees on other municipal and private land. The municipality actively works with the cities Digital Twin and simultaneously underscores the pivotal role of trees in shaping culturally significant environments within the city, and their value for biodiversity and promoting a healthier urban environment.

Hartill Trädexpert AB

Company

Hartill Trädexpert AB is an experienced arborist enterprise with over 30 years in business dedicated to delivering professional tree services, education and consultancy. Their commitment lies in blending high-quality standards with a focus on aesthetics and functionality.
